I like the idea of what I saw on Facebook recently (above), and I know that it is MUCH easier said than done. It makes a wonderful poster, but how do we really do this? Here’s what I’ve found. If I am the center of the universe, then everything revolves around me, and people and circumstances should line up like I WANT. Huh! That doesn’t often happen. So, now I’m blaming someone/something else, I’m angry, and eventually (after enough repeat incidents) I’m unforgiving and even judging. Sound familiar?
So, here’s what I’ve learned. We have NO idea why people do what they do. Really! There’s a saying that hurt people hurt other people. Agreed! I’ve been on both sides of that fence. And it ain’t pretty from either direction. So, what to do…?
Forgive. Extend mercy, compassion, kindness, and even a listening ear.
Realize that you are just as capable of doing the very same thing that you despise. “No way!” you say. Well…you’re wrong. I said it. You’re dead wrong. And once you put yourself above someone else, they become “less” to you. Not okay.
I’m climbing off of the proverbial soapbox now. We are all made from the same fabric, and boy do we need each other. Let’s honor and value each other equally, regardless of …whatever. Don’t throw out discernment or morality. Never! But also remember that we are all human; we make mistakes, and we hurt others, often without even trying. So commit to extend some grace and understanding, in whatever circumstances you might find yourself.
Give someone a hug, stop and listen to the person who has no one, hear the other side of the story from someone who has hurt you, and learn to love unconditionally. What a task! An everyday, every moment of the day commitment. Much tougher than the pretty poster states. But it will improve your health.
So what about you? I realize that you have likely been hurt, felt betrayed, maybe even abandoned or maligned at some point in your life (or you can certainly plan to be in your future). But, please remember this: Even though we desperately need each other, we can only take responsibility for ourselves. And that’s the truth.
